after a while of deliberation and heavy experimentation, i’ve decided to pick up the Some Strange Substance name for new recordings once again! i have been recording and experimenting with works for a new release since February, and while some aspects of new material are still in development, i’ll try to find ways to release tasters at a faster pace than i did before. determined to get a definite release going this year.
BUT… before we can get to the new, i have to reintroduce some of the old… watch the next post.
hey! i’m taking my sweet time finishing the mixes for the 2010 sampler EP but i think it’s alright to share the final version of the first track, “Golden Textured Sky,” with you. enjoy, and please spread it if you liked it!
lyrics this morning i woke up and i saw the textured sky i reached for my surroundings and they were all phantom beings i went outside and i reached for it it was golden it was swollen it was strange like nothing i’d ever seen before oh, nothing i’d ever seen before nothing i’d ever seen before it was strange
it’s been a while since i made a song-in-progress post so i’d like to post this one… i’ve been tinkering with it since late last night and it’s a really heavy bass/drum/synth mechanical thing. if it doesn’t fit in with the new debut songs i’ll lump it on an EP. definitely want to see how i twist this one into a full-blown song.
the play soundtrack project marches onward! i attended a rehearsal this weekend and assembled a few quick demos on the spot. current song titles are “the sea,” “the kids,” and “royalty.” they’re more in the style of my previous work, kind of a hybrid version of Bienvenido Mañana and the Dreams EP stuff… it’ll premiere sometime this summer so you’ll see those new songs sometime soon!
debut sessions continue on. i’ve completed “fight or flight” and “golden textured sky” and progressed on three new tracks: “the triumph,” “your souls,” and “the fever.” still on track for fall/winter!
it sounds real repetitive and shitty right now (the timing on the synth/string part is horribly off!) but you get where i’m going with this. triumphant tune with huge bombastic bass/keyboard/drums. might leave this an instrumental
good news! i can’t take a hiatus after all. why? you’ll see…
i’ve recently been invited to record a soundtrack for a small stage show! i’ll be sitting down with the writer and director and assembling demos and sketches for the show. hopefully i’ll be able to share the final products with you all for free, i don’t want to charge for any of this new stuff.
final final stage for the split ep! it’s not even an EP at this point though, it’s an album basically. all we need is album art and a name. it should be out within the next week! tracklisting below.
Intro to Infinity
Recipes of Life I: Cosmic Martini
Recipes of Life II: Pharoah con Latte
Recipes of Life III: Brown Acid
Hope in the Face of Despair
Was It All a Dream?
i’ve been recording demos for the debut at an almost frenetic pace. probably about 20 or 25 sketches done so far. you’ll see these soon, rest assured! planning release of the finished album by the winter.
this is another slice from the latest sessions. it’s called “Fight or Flight” and it’s an angrier, more fast-paced jam with more real instruments. thrown around pre-Reverse Spring and deals with my then-frustration with my peers. vocals distorted to near-death. nice dissolution to classic electronic jam near the end.
the only incomplete part of the song is the lyrics…
as the Some Strange Substance saga comes to a temporary close, i think it’d be appropriate to post a sketch of a new song i’ve been working on off and on for the debut. it’s called “Golden Textured Sky” and these unfinished lyrics deal with the story of a boy who wakes up one spring morning to find that the sky — once a comforting, happy blue being — has been replaced by a crumbling golden facade of despair and unhappiness and death.
this is a few chords of really distorted digital keyboard with some digital bass underneath. my vocals are distorted and thrown into some reverb and auto-tune. everything here is a placeholder and could be subject to change by the time the final product appears.
this morning i woke up and i saw the textured sky i reached for my surroundings and they were all phantom beings i went outside and i reached for it it was golden it was golden it was strange (probably the strangest thing i’ve ever seen) like nothing i’d ever seen before oh, nothing i’d ever seen before oh, nothing i’d ever seen before it was strange
the split EP will be coming out in May. i’ll be contributing “untitled”, “internal fire”, and “was it all a dream??” for my side of the affair. it’s in the final mixing process at the moment.
after this i’ll be retiring the Some Strange Substance name for a while and focusing on more experimental works under my own name. you might see some songs i’ve mentioned here pop up in more fragmented and experimental incarnations! i’ve already released two pieces, 21:20 and Lucid Fluid. give those a try!
when will SSS be back? soon enough. i’m working on assembling a full band and fleshing out new content for the full-length, so you can bet it’ll be back with a bang!
work continues. lately i’ve been working on some new demos with basic band elements (playing all these myself so they’re far more traditional than my other content), but at the same time there are lots of early morning sessions with synthesizers again… it’s clear that i’ve got two seperate music styles in mind. i’ll find a way to separate these.
been re-recording a lot of Collected Tapes-era stuff! “lost” and “tonight”.
i have a split EP coming out in a few weeks! i’m not going to announce details or a tracklisting just yet, but my half deals with a lot of dream sequences and ambience. it’s a pretty chill thing.
another collected tapes-session fragment. this is me playing about ten seconds of guitar and then playing it over again while messing with a repeater. last few seconds is a… frog thing? panned to left/right. not sure.
